Five Questions You Should Ask Before Hiring an Architect

Here are five questions to consider before hiring an architect:

1. Can I See Your Credentials?

There are countless design and construction considerations for every project, from determining the build codes for a new medical facility to designing classrooms for an educational facility. Because of these considerations and safe building codes, all states require special training and licensures for architectural firms.

The architecture firm of choice should freely share the education, training, and licensure information for all of its architects. The firm can also disclose any specializations, such as training in green building practices or large-scale public works projects.

2. What is Your Experience?

In addition to the architect’s post-educational training, you should inquire about the person’s additional experience. For this, consider not only the length of time that the architect has been in business but also the types of projects that person has completed.

The architect should have many examples available, which could include both online portfolios and physical addresses that you can visit in person. If you are building a car wash, for example, you need a firm that has experience designing and building more than single-family homes.

3. Can I See Some References?

References are important when selecting an architect. A great place to start is reading online reviews. Examine anything posted on the firm’s website as well as on social media platforms and independent sites.

Next, examine the firm’s portfolio and look for any posted details about completed projects. Then, ask for specific examples or references that pertain to your desired project. You should be able to contact these individuals or companies for their feedback and experience on projects that are similar to yours.

4. What is Your Work Process?

If you are hiring an architect for a new project, either to renovate an existing building or create a new structure, they should be able to clearly explain their work process. How will your project get off the ground? The firm should give you a detailed look at their work process, including how they design structures, determine build codes, work with contractors, and handle inspections.

5. Who’s in Control?

Once the work process is established, you will want to know how the day-to-day operations will run.  When you hire a residential or office building architect, is that person in control of the entire project? You need to know if the architect offers construction observation, who will hire the builders and inspectors, and how mid-project decisions will be made.

For example, are you expected to hand the designs over, or will you be involved along the way? Is the contractor allowed to make on-site changes? These questions are important to consider; otherwise, there could be a gap in the process that results in design changes or missed build codes.

Working with a small architecture firm can help ensure that you receive individualized attention and prompt communication. Asking the right questions will ensure your project goes from vision to reality without too much drama.
